What is an LED driver?

The power behind the lighting.

An LED driver — sometimes referred to as an LED power supply or LED transformer — converts and regulates electrical power to provide the controlled output required by LED lighting.

Different LED products require different voltages, current levels and power capacities. The driver therefore needs to be correctly matched to the lighting being installed.

LED strip voltage, wattage, total run length, dimming requirements and installation conditions all influence driver selection.

Why the right driver matters

Correct power. Better performance.

Driver selection affects much more than whether the LEDs simply turn on.

OUT

Stable Light Output

Correctly matched power helps maintain consistent brightness and reduce unwanted flickering.

PRO

System Protection

Appropriate professional drivers may include overload, short-circuit and temperature protection.

REL

Reliability

Appropriate sizing helps reduce stress on the power supply and supports reliable operation.

DIM

Dimming & Control

The selected driver affects how the lighting interacts with dimmers and control systems.

FIT

Installation Flexibility

Different configurations support cabinetry, architectural details, commercial installations and protected environments.

Choosing the right LED driver

What determines the right power supply?

Driver selection involves more than finding a power supply with enough wattage.

01

Voltage

Output voltage must match the requirements of the LED lighting.

02

Total Wattage

Connected lighting load determines the required driver capacity.

03

Dimming

The driver must support the intended dimming and control technology.

04

Environment

Installation conditions affect the enclosure and protection required.

05

Application

Cabinet lighting and multi-zone architectural projects can require different power strategies.

Driver sizing: Some designs may provide approximately 10–20% operating headroom above calculated load. Final sizing should follow the actual LED products, driver requirements and installation conditions.

Driver types

Different lighting systems require different drivers.

Representative Wired4Signs products are shown to illustrate the available driver categories. The page remains application-led rather than model- or SKU-led.

Installation environment

Power supplies for different environments.

The physical location of the driver is another important consideration when designing the lighting system.

Compact

Useful in cabinetry, millwork and other locations where available installation space is limited.

Enclosed

Provides additional physical protection for suitable permanent installations.

Waterproof / IP-Rated

Appropriately rated solutions are available for suitable damp and exterior applications.

Open-Frame & Specialty

Other configurations may be suitable where the driver forms part of a larger electrical assembly.

Protected installations

Match the enclosure to the environment.

Exterior or moisture-prone installations may require a suitable IP-rated driver, compatible wiring, connectors and installation method.

Environmental suitability should always be confirmed for the actual driver and installation conditions.

LED driver FAQs

Questions before choosing a power supply.

You do not need to know the exact driver before contacting BPS.

What does an LED driver do?
An LED driver converts and regulates electrical power to provide the voltage or current required by compatible LED lighting.
How do I know what wattage driver I need?
Driver capacity depends on connected lighting load, voltage, product requirements and system design.
Can any LED driver be dimmed?
No. The driver, LED products and intended dimming technology must be compatible.
What is the difference between constant voltage and constant current?
Constant-voltage drivers maintain a defined voltage while constant-current drivers regulate current. The selected LED product determines which is required.
Can LED drivers be installed outdoors?
Appropriately rated power supplies are available for suitable exterior and damp applications. The actual environmental rating must match the installation conditions.
Can BPS help select the driver?
Yes. Share the lighting type, voltage, approximate load, controls and installation conditions.
